Linux Mint 18 ‘Sarah’ is now in beta, with a final release expected soon - vallieresurriess

Linux Mint 18 is at present in beta, and you can try it yourself. The stable version of this popular Ubuntu-based Linux distribution should comprise ready soon.

Information technology's now founded on Ubuntu 16.04

Linux Mint's 17.x series focused connected polish and finish atop a stable Ubuntu 14.04 LTS base. With Linux Pot 18, the project is upgrading to an Ubuntu 16.04 LTS base. This way a much more modern Linux kernel, newer drivers, and improved hardware support. More hardware should work better, and the software available in the repositories will be much newer.

The shift to an Ubuntu 16.04 base means that Linux Mint 18 now includes the controversial systemd initialisation platform, atomic number 3 the Mint team had expected. Both Ubuntu 16.04 and Debian 8, which Ubuntu is based on, use systemd by default.

Cinnamomum zeylanicum and MATE have been reinforced

Mint still offers two editions: uncomparable based on the more modern Cinnamon 3.0 screen background and another supported the MATE 1.14 background, which is based on the classic GNOME 2.0 inscribe. These are newer versions of Cinnamon and MATE, which offer more polish.

Arsenic Linux Sight developer Temperate Lefebvre proclaimed in April, a collection of "xapps"—which are double cross-screen background applications—will be compatible with some of Linux Mint's desktop environments. The four xapps are Xplayer, a media player supported Totem; Xed, a textual matter editor supported Pluma; Xviewer, a picture viewer based on Eye of Dwarf; and Xreader, a document reader based on Atril.

Many applications nowadays better support HiDPI displays, so they'll work better along recent laptops and Personal computer displays with pixel-obtuse screens.

There's a revolutionary report, but IT's not the default option

Linux Mint 18 includes a new desktop root word that's more "flat," Eastern Samoa is the prevailing title trend in software. This paper is known as "Mint-Y."

However, Linux Mint is making the change optional. The old theme, now known arsenic "Mint-X", remains the default. The new theme is installed with the OS and available for users to select in the theme settings. If users are elated with Sight-Y over the long full term, it may become the default root word in a future expiration once it matures. Mint is being very conservative here.

Linux Mint 18's new Mint-Y theme on the Cinnamon desktop.

Light and dark versions of the new Mint-Y theme are available in your desktop's stem settings window.

Codecs are zero longer installed by default

A not-ex gratia change that you'll notice when downloading the images is that Linux Mint now distributes few ISO images. There are nary ISO images for multimedia codecs.

To obtain multimedia system codecs, you'll have to click Multimedia Codecs on the welcome screen, head to Fare > Sound and Picture > Set up Multimedia system Codecs, surgery activate a checkbox during installation. This helps simplify things for the Linux Mint developers, while guardianship the codecs easy to install for users.

You can try Linux Whole lot 18 today and report any issues you find to the developers. If you're notwithstandin victimisation Linux Mint 17.3, we'd recommend ready until the final release to upgrade to deflect whatever bugs.
